Presentation of Fruit to the Lord Mayor 2020

An Ancient Custom

In this year where the Coronavirus Pandemic has caused so many events to be cancelled, with careful planning and adherence of social distancing, the Ceremony of Presentation of Fruit to the Lord Mayor was given the green light and took place outside and under the Porch of the Mansion House.

Despite the heavy restrictions combined with nonstop rain, neither the spirit nor enthusiasm of the Master, the Clerk, the Beadle and the Fruit Porter were dampened and did not prevent them from performing their duties in the time-honoured tradition, which allowed the Presentation of Fruit to be made to the Lord Mayor on the doorstep at Mansion House.

As our pictures record the Lord Mayor and Lady Mayoress were delighted to meet and greet the Fruiterers’ deputation which provided the opportunity for the Master to make the presentation and for the Fruiterers to fulfil their part of this Ancient Custom which has taken place for centuries.

Albeit under very difficult and different circumstances where the rule of six applied, the number of Fruiterers able to attend was greatly reduced but this did not lessen the accomplishment and enjoyment of this important occasion which was declared a huge success by those who were able to participate.
