St Paul’s Day, Monday 25th January 2016

If St Paul’s Day be fair and clear,

It doth betide a happy year;

If blustering winds do blow aloft,

Then wars will trouble our realm full oft,

If clouds or mist do dark the sky,

Great store of birds and beasts shall die;

And if by chance to snow or rain,

Then will be dear all sorts of grain

Luckily for the incoming Master, Stephen Bellamy-James, St Paul’s Day 2016 was, indeed, fair and clear!

As is tradition in the Worshipful Company of Fruiterers a Court Meeting was held at the Innholders prior to the church service at St Mary, Abchurch. At this meeting Dennis Surgeon was appointed as the Upper Warden for the next year and John Warner as the new Renter Warden. Our new Clerk, Philip Brown, was also confirmed in his position.

During the service – led by our Honorary Chaplain, The Reverend Canon Nigel Abbott – Stephen Bellamy-James took the oath as the new Master and the sermon was given by The Very Reverend Dr Christopher Lewis – former Dean of Christ Church, Oxford and shipmate of Master Rupert Best.

The Company then returned to the Innholders’ Hall for lunch.

During the lunch Past Master Olins proposed a toast to the outgoing Master.
