St Paul’s Day, 25th January 2018

As is customary our new Master, Liveryman John Warner, and his new Wardens were installed on St Paul’s Day, St Paul being the Worshipful Company of Fruiterer’s Patron Saint.

This is always one of the most enjoyable days of the calendar and this year was no exception.

The day started with a meeting of the Court in Innholders’ Hall. During this meeting the Upper Warden became Master-elect. He then installed his successor as Upper Warden and the the new Renter Warden.

The Court then moved to the “Fruiterer’s Church” St Mary, Abchurch.

There they were joined by other Liverymen and their guests for a service during which the incoming Master took his oath and signed the Register. The sermon was preached by the Fruiterers’ new Honorary Chaplain, his first in what everyone hopes will be a long series of sermons in this role. As he reminded us his predecessor served 20 years, which was somewhat shorter than some of those that had gone before!

Everyone then returned to the Innholders’ Hall for a lunch hosted by the outgoing Master, Dennis Surgeon.

During lunch Past-Master Peter Bartlett proposed a toast to the outgoing Master who replied by thanking all those that had supported him during his year.

At the end of this lunch he installed the new Master, presented him the Master’s Jewel, clothed him in the Master’s Gown and handed him a copy of the Charter and the Gavel. In turn the new Master presented the, now, Immediate Past Master with his jewel.

The new Master hands the Past Master's Jewel to the Immediate Past Master Dennis Surgeon at the end of a successful and enjoyable year.

Thus ended a most memorable day!
